Pro-freedom groups call for shutdown, ‘black day’ on January 26

Srinagar: Scores of pro-freedom leaders and activists on Monday staged a protest sit-in against what they called brute and egoistic approach of state administration and the deteriorating condition of detainees inside jails and police stations.
The sit-in was scheduled by joint resistance leadership headed by Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Mohammad Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik. The leaders reiterated call for complete shutdown on January 26.
“India has no constitutional right to observe Republic Day in J&K as they have occupied state with their military might,” the speakers said to the protesters. Noor Mohamad Kalwal, Raja Merajuddin and Gulam Nabi Zaki addressed the participants. According to a statement, the leaders said that unification of pro-freedom leaders has infused a new spirit and rejuvenated the passion among the people.
Reiterating their appeal for complete shutdown on January 26, they said that every kind of activity related to India’s Republic Day should be boycotted. They said it is ridiculous to call and force employees to attend 26th January event. Terming this state terrorism, the joint resistance leadership said that it is highly condemnable. They called for complete boycott on January 26, and said that India has no constitutional right to observe Republic Day in J&K as they have occupied state with their military might.
