Police thrash journos in Sopore

Baramulla: Two journalists were thrashed while others were abused and chased away by police on Friday in Sopore.
The journalists were covering protest that broke out after Friday prayers in the town.  While journalists were covering the protest, a posse of police led by station house officer (SHO) Sopore reached the spot and thrashed two photojournalists including Eshan Peer of Varmul Post and Mohammad Younis of Gulistan news channel.
Police also damaged their cameras and cellphones, the photojournalists said. “SHO Sopore told me that if you will not leave I will shoot you. He himself thrashed me and also ordered one of his guards to beat me. He also abused me and other journalists present on the spot,” Eshan told Kashmir Reader.
The injured journalists were removed to hospital where they were treated and discharged later.
SHO Sopore police station Mudasir Ahmad Geelani denied he thrashed the photojournalists. “It is a baseless allegation,” Mudasir told Kashmir Reader.
Later, journalists submitted a memorandum to deputy commissioner Baramulla and met DIG police north Kashmir. Both the officials assured them action would be initiated against the guilty officer.
